ART SHOW WEEK 4/30 - 5/4
Reception May 1, 4:30 - 6:00 pm
The Visual Arts department has transformed the Barn into a wonderful museum showcasing our students' artwork from throughout the year. Come check it out anytime during school hours through Friday, May 4. The Performing Arts department encourages you to make a special effort to come out on Tuesday evening, May 1 from 4:30 - 6:00 pm for the Opening Reception, which will feature not only some yummy snacks but also student musical performances. One additional note - volunteers are requested for the week of May 14 to help wrap pottery so that it can be sent home safely.

Final Boxtops Collection Contest
The final collection of box tops for this year will take place on Tuesday May 15th, with the winners announced at the following assembly. The winning class will get a treat party of their choice or a free tag day. There will also be a grand prize given to the class that has collected the most box tops for the entire year! To date, the students and faculty have collected a total of 6421 box tops, which has already surpassed last year's final total of 6061 box tops! Let's make this final collection a big one and see if we can reach 7000!! Any questions? Please email Cynthia Hionis at

5/2 Grade 8 Parents and Students Meeting 7:00 pm
Secondary School Placement
This is a very important meeting for all parents of 8th graders and for the 8th graders themselves, as it is the official kick-off meeting for the entire process of finding their next school. Mr. Manahan will be handing out documents that parents will need in order to get started. In addition, he will go over the calendar for the next 6 months, talk about the SSAT (Secondary Schools Achievement Test), discuss boarding vs. day vs. public school options, and generally outline what to expect.

May 4 is Grandparents Day!!!
Grandparents' Day will be on Friday, May 4. This is such a special tradition here at Upland! This has always been a wonderful day at Upland, and this year promises to be no different! Lower School will once again put on a musical performance to end the day (remember, it's a 12:00 dismissal). If your child/children's grandparents have not yet RSVP'd, please have them call Lucy Singleton at 610/444/8114 so that we may have your child/children's schedule ready for them. We're looking forward to seeing you!

Varsity Lacrosse Teams to CT for Tournament
On Friday, May 4, both the boys' and girls' Varsity Lacrosse teams will be traveling to Greenwich, CT for a tournament. They will return on Saturday, May 5. Go Upland!

Grade 6 to Gettysburg on May 7
It's "Survivor: Civil War"! The 6th grade will be re-enacting Picket's Charge at the Gettysburg Battlefield on Monday May 7. Each student has been assigned a real soldier's identity. As they march across the battlefield, they will learn who is wounded, who dies, and who lives. What a great way to make history memorable!

5/8 Kindergarten visits the New Garden Flying Field
The Kindergarten is excited to be visiting the New Garden Flying Field (more info at
http://www.newgardenflyingfield.com/) from 12:45 - 2:15 on Tuesday, May 8. They will enjoy a guided tour courtesy of manager Jon Martin (Upland alum and parent of JJ). We all hope for great weather, but if it is inclement, the Kindergarten are prepared with a rain date of Monday, May 21.

Thursday, 5/10
Grade 5 Shadows Grade 6
Grade 5 Parent Meeting at 7:00 pm
On Thursday, May 10, current 5th grade students will get a taste of life in the Upper School. They will be paired up with current 6th graders, and will shadow them throughout the day. That evening, at 7:00 pm, their parents will meet with Clee Edgar, Head of Upper School, and several 6th grade teachers to discuss their children's transition to 6th grade.

Grade 4 to Cape Henlopen May 10-11
On Thursday and Friday, May 10/11 the 4th grade will be on an overnight field trip to Cape Henlopen in Lewes, DE. The trip has a science focus, and the students will be studying oceanography. They will be leaving from the RINK lot at 7:30 am on Thursday and returning to the MAIN parking lot at approximately 4 pm on Friday. There are lots of exciting activities and classes scheduled. Keep your fingers crossed for great beach weather!!!!

5/14 Grade 9 Book Dedication Assembly
The Assembly on Monday, May 14 will be a special one for the 9th graders. A generous donor has allowed Upland to add one book to the library in honor of each graduate. Mrs. McKay has chosen the books based on each student's interests, and she will reveal the titles and her rationale for choosing them at the assembly.

5/14 Grade 1 Field Trip to Courthouse
The 1st grade will be in court on Monday, May 14!! No, they're not in trouble, they're just going on a field trip to the Chester County Justice Center. They will meet with a judge, get to see a courtroom, and visit the sheriff's office.

5/14 is Pioneer Day for Grade 2
Monday, May 14 will be Pioneer Day in the second grade. Students will dress as pioneers, and re-enact such pioneer experiences as circling the wagons of their wagon train and enjoying stories around the campfire. Wagons, Ho!

May 15 UPA Volunteer Appreciation Coffee
At 8:30 am on Tuesday May 15, the Upland Parents' Association will hold a celebration in the Barn Gallery to thank all the many volunteers who help to make Upland such a special place.

5/16 Kindergarten tours Kennett Square
Kindergarten will be taking a walking tour of Kennett Square on Wednesday May 16 from 8:30 am - 1:45 pm as a follow-up to their study of community helpers. Some of their stops will be at the police station, the fire station, the library, and a bank.

5/16 Grade 7 play: Anne-Archy
Come to the Barn to watch the 7th grade performance of
Anne-Archy on Wednesday May 16. Curtain times are 1:30 and 6:30 pm. The cast will be portraying a high school drama club as it prepares for the opening night of
Anne of Green Gables. The performance starts out normally enough. But when a rumor spreads that there is an acting agent in the audience, the students scramble to be discovered. Anarchy ensues! Wigs fall off, ankles are sprained, and the stage manager sets fire to the prompt script. The show promises to be a delightful diversion!

The 9th grade will be on a white-water rafting adventure Thursday and Friday May 17-18. Here's hoping for wonderful weather for them!

Pre-K and K Field Day May 18
From 10:15 to 11:30, the Pre-K and Kindergarten will be showing off their athletic skills at their Field Day. The field events will begin at 10:15. The Bike Parade (a not-to be missed event!) will follow the field events and should begin by 11:00. NOTE: All Pre-K and K students must wear bike helmets during the bike parade. Mrs. Mehdizadeh and Mrs. Yeatman will be providing more detailed information to the pre-K and K parents.

The Chester County Shakespeare Festival, now in its 24th year, is both an educational and entertaining event that brings together nearly 300 talented students from Chester County elementary, middle and high schools. Each school is given 25 minutes to perform a Shakespearean production. The goal of the festival is to cultivate a love of Shakespeare and theater in our students and to enrich the language arts curricula of our schools.

The proceeds from this year's golf outing will go to support the Alumni Association and the John M. and Ellen B. Cleveland Alumni Scholarship Fund.
